Life Essence is a resource used by Gem Staves to trigger special moves - usually a buff or heal. They are generated by attacking with Gem Staves and their generation rate can be increased with trinkets. For more info, check Gem Staves
The max number of life essence a player or NPC can carry at one time is 5. The number is indicated by the swirling orbs around the player and the Life Essence Buff icon that appears under the HP/Resilience/Mana bar.
Life Essence expires after 60 seconds since the last time the player used a gem staff to attack an enemy - meaning the cooldown refreshes even if no new life essence were generated, as long as the gem staff hit something.
